PayPal Comes To South Africa and ADSL Goes Uncapped

One can be forgiven for thinking South Africans have woken up in the twilight zone, after years of complaining, we finally got the two things we wanted most… PayPal in South Africa and Uncapped ADSL – and this past week has seen both happen all at once.

Firstly Kudos to Mweb for putting themselves back on the map, and I see a few other ISP’s are scrambling to catch-up with the uncapped ADSL offer.

As for FNB, well there is no doubt that they are leading the banking charge (in my humble opinion) and the move to bring PayPal to South Africa is bold, wise and much needed, so thank you.

I just converted my personal SA PayPal account to a business PayPal account and linked it via my FNB internet banking console, all super-duper easy… so if you don’t have an FNB bank account and internet banking sorry for you… pop in and setup an account soon!

And this is just in time because Luis and I have a BIG Internet Marketing announcement coming in the next few weeks, and no guesses which payment platform we are going to be using when we launch this.

And as if things just could not get more sweet (as in sweet bru), Telkom is already beta testing 8Meg ADSL

So let’s see what do we have left to bitch about… AH Juliaaaas (what a chop).

  1. Great stuff man, a lot of new tech changes meaning more opportunities.
It is about time for both of them.

  2. This is fantastic for SA internet entrepreneurship, absolutely great news. My brain is literally working overtime on the opportunities that await us.

  3. This is awesome news! So glad they finally decided to listen to the public!

  4. This is fantastic news about PayPal and as I already bank with FNB it makes things much easier – thanks for the heads-up Justin.

I am also hoping that Telkom soon follows MWeb with the uncapped ADSL.

    Cheers for now

  5. Hi Justin

Thanks for this fantastic news. I know that FNB have been in talks with Paypal and have been waiting with baited breathe for this. It opens up the international market quite a bit for South African affiliate marketers as so many companies pay commissions in to Paypal.

  6. Wonderful I am about to release a SA product and was going to use Alert Pay but don't need to :D . I have always had a premier account and verified but I see I can currently only add a american account. As for MWEB – I don't trust them as they might just put 1000's of users via a tunnel. I am with Afrihost currently and they do offer R30 for 2gb on my 4M line so I will stick with them for a while as they will soon do a 512 uncapped. They do offer a 4M for less than MWEB uncapped but I only use +- 20 – 30gb a month so not worth going uncapped. Noways will I go backward to 384 for R200 as those days are gone. Now we just need to educate the SA public on Paypal to make clients feel safe using the system. I mean I sell info products and do a 3d boxed product on the site for illustrations and when the people receive the CD they complain as they wan't to know where the box is.

  7. Just signed up for the paypal and will be on the phone to mweb in minutes! Great Post and Great News, Justin! Thanks!

  8. Way to go, SA is clawing it's way back into global society!

I means we have access to our PayPal money locally – Good – but SAARS (sp on purpose!) also now also has access to the information via the link to FNB – Bad.

One wonders if transferring from one PayPal (international) to a local PayPal account will attract the SAARS to the international account for their share?

Not that I have anything to worry about as the Paypal account does not have two pennies to rub together!

  9. I am COMPLETELY and UTTERLY EXCITED about this week’s INCREDIBLY OUTSTANDING news! We are long overdue but we’re finally here!
Justin, as usual, thanks for bringing us the BREAKING NEWS. Look forward to your project with Luis coming soon.

  10. This is best news I have heard in years. Way to go South Africa, its the going to be the best country in the world.

  11. I was on the phone to my FNB branch earlier and only one person in the entire branch knew what paypal was. he took my number and "investigated" and got back to me just after 12 am and gave me the news.
