I love Natal but must agree with Justin the Online stuff is the Cape
went there for some programming courses a couple years back

But cold weather and unable to swim in the ocean. Yeah JHB is the
economic hub but I will always love Natal even though I am in
Spain at the moment and spend loads of time in the UK.

So Go Margate and the South Coast Love Ye – Natal will catch up

Very good!. The two interesting points for me was that you should budget 80% on marketing. So often (and I am not referring to online business) marketing is not planned and budgeted with a lot of thought.
The second point I enjoyed, was the one about reducing spending during a boom and spending during a recession.

Malcolm I hear what you are saying about some people not having marketing skills, I would however offer this advice to all would be business owners and entrepreneurs – if you can’t market, don’t get into the business.

The primary reason for getting into business in the first place is to move product (produce sales), not produce it.

Perhaps that's the starting point that is missed?

I like KISS – always a good lesson when starting something – stop thinking about what tools you need and get going with the most simplest of tools. If you can don't use any

Justin you are a very good marketer – remember some people just don't have the skill or knack or don't want to be great marketers – for them it pays for them to sit with a great marketer and get the hired help to do the marketing. Often these people are propeller heads – they need help marketing and we need their product.

A product is 10% done when it is finished and ready for market, the other 90% is marketing, selling and supporting.

Marketing planning, I agree that unless you know what the market needs and know it very well, don't even bother starting.

In a recession I think the people just hide better, it takes a little more ingenious marketing plans to find them.

Looking forward to the next podcast, "Making money as quickly as the on-line pay as you go gurus have told us!"

KISS – Keep it simple stupid is a rule that always applies. Start with pen and paper and then move to some form of mind mapping software if it is that intricate that is is required.

I have built a 50 bar company on the back of napkins and scraps of paper – the point I am impressing don't get caught up in the planning tools, just make sure you plan, often the easiest (hint, pen and paper) route is the best.

Planning is a confusing stage for me, as I love planning and do it often. The problem I find myself in is the methods of the process. Plan on paper or digital, do you print a mother of a skeleton on 200 pages and paste it to your wall. And what if you need to make a change!!! As always a very thought provoking podcast.
Something I would say that I'm taking away today is to strengthen the marketing plan opposed to simply a marketing goal. Although there is a plan, its fairly simply for some online sites and I would like to develop that more. I followed the SEO IS DEAD campaign closely and really liked the process. Maybe I need to put up my whiteboard?!
I think the key is to develop the plan to almost exhaust all options to capture leads to sell and upsell too i.e. the sales funnel.
The key phrase for today, "Market Today to Get Sales Tomorrow!"
Thanks for another awesome show guys. I'm looking forward to the next podcast on How To Make Money Online!

"the don't bet on your product" comment is something that a lot of people forget. well said.
i am busy dealing with people that do 1 million rands a month in marketing budgets and it does amaze me. ( a well established off-line marketing business idea coming online)
and these guys tend to show no fear, and it is good advice that you give – "contrary thinking"

The 1GB Fibre Network will certainly help Google with 'organising the world's information' better. With higher speeds you could run communication / information to absolutely any device in a household, including the fridge (milk replenishment) and kitchen sink (blockage notification to local plumber). Weren't Google playing around with household appliances not too long ago for energy saving purposes? Additionally you could have a completely remote controlled home on the 1GB Fibre Network. We're getting there…
You can already get everything over a link – TV, Broadband, Video and Telephone. Virgin are doing it in the UK as well.

Simple really, money you get back, less the money you put in to get the revenue as a percentage.
But all to often the bean counters want to complicate the formula.

KISS – is always something we should remind ourselves of, don't over complicate _anything_!

I like the question and answer on what is perceived as a good ROI.

Phillip for the affiliate model:

* 80-100% ROI is acceptable
* 100 – 300% is good
* 300% + is excellent

For your own product if you work of gross marking (i.e. profit after sale)

* 100% – 200% ROI is acceptable
* 200 – 400% is good
* 400% + is excellent

But again that's my own interpretation, and it really depends on WHAT YOU are prepared to work for…

There are models that you can follow in the offline world if you are smart and you have no choice of trading anywhere but offline… the problem is nobody actually thinks about it or does it.

For example, take out an advert and have a dedicated email address or telephone number for that add so you can track the response rates etc.

You see the fact is, yes we have more options online, but its not because there are no options offline that the online model is better, its the fact that most business owners are lazy and ill advised and therefore don't as you say quantify everything.

Hi Joan, I agree absolutely, however since this post is about ROI and not taxation and specifically ROI in terms of making campaign decisions, I think its safe to leave the tax debate for another day

You're absolutely right. I know a guy that tracks offline in a way that you've described in your comment above but unfortunately ends there and doesn't follow through to the financial aspect of the closed sale. Its purely for feedback counter of an offline advert that they might run. I think online offers a more speedy, consolidated approach that just works very well.

Thanks for the advice. As always, straight to the point. If there's not enough ROI then what IS the point?! I think that's something I've held onto from the start talking to you about the online model – how does one quantify it? And Chris you're so right, there is nothing like the online model to track absolutely everything that's going on in your business. Offline just doesn't cut it any more.

Hi Justin,

Thanks for the post – the KISS model always works best. Coming from an accounting background this is simple enough for anyone to follow.

My only thought to ponder… Earnings for the individual should be taken into consideration, especially if you have hit the Tax bracket and need to declare earnings. Remember Tax Man will not reimburse you for not calculating correctly.
